Our community-based outreach programs are focused on bringing individuals from diverse backgrounds together to celebrate and respect the human race.

Special Athlete Program


The Gym’s Special Athlete Program works with individuals between the ages of 14 and 20+, and within a wide range of disabilities (ASD, muscular skeletal conditions, intellectual disabilities, etc) to increase their opportunities to learn, work and play. Our approach to total body wellness is holistic and centered around three central goals: 1) Behavior: learning healthy peer interactions, learning to support others through positive verbal and nonverbal interaction, learning to work together with a group to accomplish shared goals, and learning to embrace constructive feedback in a safe, positive environment. 

2) Therapy: learning new techniques for emotional regulation, developing a sense of ownership and success through hard work and dedication, and becoming part of a supportive local community.3) Fitness: improving overall health through total body strength and conditioning tailored to individual needs, as well as enhancing posture, proprioception, and movement skills. Therapeutic recreational activities include: foundational movement patterns (such as crawling and other developmental skills), coordination training (such as hand-eye), proprioceptive training, strength and aerobic development, and a great variety of movement skills which are valuable for daily living and improving quality of life. The environment at The Gym is conducive to meeting the needs of each of its participants through providing a 1:1 ratio of support. With this type of support, each Special Athlete has individual attention from a trainer along with positive reinforcement from his or her peers. At the end of each quarter, the FAPT case manager receives a detailed reported on the overall progress of the participant.

Community Cardio

Every Saturday morning at 8am, TheGym offers a Free Community Cardio training session. This group focuses on conditioning with a workout plan that everyone can do and will be successful in! All we need is for you to show up, be ready to workout and just have fun! If you would like more information, call: 434-878-0369

Youth Empowerment

This program meets one time per month for up to two hours. It gives youth 14+ the opportunity to interact with area mentors. These mentors provide support and guidance with the challenges that life can present. During these two hours, the youth are provided with a meal, various therapeutic activities that will help developingcoping skills that they can use during periods of frustration, anger and anxiety-provoking events. The goal of this program is to create a safe environment in which area youth can express their cares, concerns, victories and sorrows without the fear of retaliation, ridicule or shame.
