One of our favorite parts of every week is our Special Athletes Program. Every Tuesday and Thursday, The Gym welcomes individuals between the ages of 14 and 20+ and within a wide range of disabilities to increase their opportunities to learn, work and play. Our approach to total body wellness is holistic and centered around three central goals:
Behavior – learning healthy peer interactions, how to support others through positive verbal and nonverbal interaction, how to work together with a group to accomplish shared goals, and how to embrace constructive feedback in a safe, positive environment.
Therapy – learning new techniques for emotional regulation, developing a sense of ownership and success through hard work and dedication, and becoming part of a supportive local community.
Fitness – improving overall health through total body strength and conditioning tailored to individual needs, as well as enhancing posture, proprioception, and movement skills.
The environment at The Gym is conducive to meeting the needs of each participant through providing a 1:1 ratio of support. Each Special Athlete has individual attention from a trainer, along with positive reinforcement from his or her peers.
Our Special Athletes also provide us with so much joy. Their hard work, determination, and spirits are always one of the week’s bright spots.
